Contact me if you are interested in joining as a postdoc, graduate student, or undergraduate student. NOTE: In July 2019, I am moving to Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. Position info will be posted in various places. You can also contact me at my new email firstinitiallastname ASPERAND unr FULLSTOP edu . Opportunities are available to do theory and experiment. Topics of interest include dynamics, solid and fluid mechanics, thin/flexible structures, fluid-structure interaction, friction, materials science/processing, soft matter, nonlinear waves, and what could informally be called applied geometry. The research page may give you some ideas. Questions we might ask include:
What are the dynamical equilibria of flexible bodies subject to inertia and drag?
When do action principles exist for non-material volumes?
When is a strip more like a rod and when is it more like a plate?
How does elastic "defect" dynamics work in plates and shells?
How does one control the end of a long cable?
What happens during impact between a flexible and a rigid body?
How do floppy things get caught on other things?
Bonus points if you know or are interested in learning how to use open source microcontrollers, and if you like playing with geometry, differential equations, paper, toys, or mechanisms.
